The surprise of the season. Bachelor Nick Viall received an unexpected visitor on the February 20 episode. After returning from hometown dates with his four remaining bachelorettes, the season 21 lead was confronted by a woman from his past. Here, The Knot recounts the surprising moments from the latest episode.
The Most Casual Rose Ceremony Ever
As Corinne, Raven, Rachel, and Vanessa question their chance of scoring hometown dates, Nick shows up at their Bahamas beach house with a handful of roses. He explains that it was difficult to let Kristina go, and calms the ladies’ nerves by giving them each a rose.
When Nick arrives in Hoxie, Arkansas to meet Raven’s family, she gives him a helmet and drives him around to see the sights on a four-wheeler.
First, Raven takes Nick to a grain mill, explaining that the structure is sacred. A police cruiser appears with lights and sirens blaring, and after chastising the lovebirds for trespassing, the officer introduces himself as Raven’s brother.
After a day of mud running and playing in puddles, Raven brings Nick home to meet her parents. During an emotional moment, her mother announces that Raven’s father–who has been fighting cancer–is now cancer-free.
Raven talks with her dad privately, and he tells her he’s looking forward to walking her down the aisle. Later, during a heart-to-heart chat between Nick and Raven’s father, Nick asks if her dad would be okay with him proposing to his daughter. “I have enough faith in her judgment that I could live with that,” her father says.
Raven is determined to tell Nick she loves him before he leaves Arkansas, but she backs out at the last minute for fear of being rejected.
As soon as Nick arrives in Dallas for his hometown date with Rachel, she surprises him by taking him to church. She’s hopeful he’ll be comfortable, and the minister welcomes Nick in front of the congregation. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt closer to Rachel than I do in this moment,” Nick says in the confessional. “I always feel the most comfortable with myself when I’m with Rachel.”
Later, Nick meets Rachel’s mother, sisters, and several other family members. Her father is unable to attend due to work commitments.
During a serious discussion, Nick explains that he doesn’t see Rachel’s color; he likes that she’s “smart, good-looking, easy to talk to, and fun.” Nick tells Rachel’s mom that he connected with Rachel from the beginning, which sets her mind at ease.
When he meets Corinne in her hometown of Miami, Nick is surprised that she has chosen to take him shopping. He soon learns that she is on a first-name basis with everyone working in the stores. “I always thought I had expensive taste, and then I met Corinne,” Nick muses.
Corinne encourages Nick to try on a pair of $800 sweatpants, and he quips that if they end up together, he’ll need to work multiple jobs. Nick is stunned when the bill is more than $3,000.
After their shopping spree, Corinne reveals that she loves Nick. She hopes her family will love him, too. When they arrive at her parents’ home, Corinne is most excited for Nick to meet her now-famous nanny, Raquel, who serves their meal.
When she talks to her dad privately, he expresses concern that Nick won’t be able to support a family. Corinne reassures him that she’s happy being the breadwinner, but her father is unconvinced.
During a one-on-one talk with Corinne’s dad, Nick admits that he hopes to be the breadwinner. Her father gives Nick his blessing if he decides to propose to his daughter.
It’s raining when Nick meets Vanessa in Montreal, Canada. She takes him to the school where she teaches adults with special needs. Her students make a scrapbook of Nick and Vanessa’s memorable Bachelor moments.
When the school day ends, Vanessa reveals that Nick will be meeting her parents separately. She has no doubt that her family will love him.
First, Nick meets Vanessa’s mother and her big Italian family. Everyone is welcoming, but Vanessa’s loved ones have concerns about Nick’s intentions. Her sister is doubtful that Vanessa has thought the relationship through. At the end of the day, Nick admits that he wishes the day had gone more smoothly.
Next, Vanessa introduces Nick to her father. During a one-on-one talk, Vanessa’s father refuses to give Nick his blessing to marry his daughter while there are three other women in the running. He’s visibly disappointed when Nick admits that he has asked multiple fathers for permission to propose to their daughters, but he’s impressed by Nick’s honesty, and ultimately gives his blessing.
An Unexpected Visitor
Nick asks the women to come to New York City for the next rose ceremony. As he deliberates over his decision, there’s a knock at his door. He’s shocked to find Andi Dorfman waiting on the other side.
The countdown to the final rose continues on The Bachelor, airing Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
