At least he had a good time. Five years ago, James Corden married TV host Julia Carey before a star-studded crowd that included many present and future celebs, among them including Matt Smith, the standout star of Netflix’s The Crown.
In a story that truly corroborates how stars are occasionally just like Us, Smith revealed on Corden’s show Thursday, January 11, that he got hammered at the nuptials. In fact, the actor got so drunk that he has physical remnants from the reception.
“You were the star of our wedding in many ways,” Corden joked to his old friend. “Do you remember anything about that day?”
“I got a scar on my chin where I fell up the stairs,” Smith, 35, replied. “I fell in a fireplace—twice! It wasn’t alight, thank God. I am a fire hazard.”
And there’s more. “I danced with Kylie Minogue, which was glorious,” Smith recalled. “And then your dad put me in a car. At the end, he was like, ‘Matt… Come on, son. It’s time. It’s time.’ He put me in the car. It was a silver Mercedes.”
But even that attempt to put Smith to bed failed. The actor revealed that he got in. “I closed the door, and I got around the side and ran back inside!” he said.
Despite his condition, both Smith and Corden agreed on one takeaway from the nuptials. “It was a good wedding!” host Corden roared.
The couple married in September 2012, at the famed Babington House in Somerset, England. The bride wore a figure-flattering, long-sleeve, lace gown by Monique Lhuillier. Guests like Lara Stone and Jimmy Carr were treated to a performance by Gary Lightbody, the lead singer of Snow Patrol.
