Royals, they really are like us in some ways. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s engagement photos instantly became iconic as a modern take on royal portraiture when they were released last fall, and as it turns out, they came to be in the most modern way possible too: via Instagram.
According to Alexi Lubomirski, the lucky photographer who was tapped to snap the stunning photos, Harry and Markle reached out to him “out of nowhere” after one of the bride’s friends pointed out his photography on the social media app.
“It was nutty,” Lubomirski told E! News. “It was a very surreal end to the year because it came out of nowhere. I think one of Meghan’s friends saw on Instagram that I was in England during the announcement of the engagement. And I was told later that this person said to her, ‘You should meet Alexi. He’s great. You’d love him.’ And that was it.”
The photos, which range from classy black-and-white images of the couple laughing and smiling as they take a stroll to more posed portraits of the pair wrapped up in each other’s arms, are a true representation of the pair’s individual and joint character, he said.
“It was one of the easiest, most joyful jobs because they were so deliciously in love,” the Brit said of the engagement shoot, his first ever. Lubomirski studied under Mario Testino and has captured everyone from Julia Roberts to Selena Gomez to Kate Winslet.
According to the photographer, the only thing he said to the couple was, “Just be yourselves and I will take pictures of you.”
Lubomirski’s wife Giada told E! News that she was “so incredibly proud” of her husband for the photo shoot, and “couldn’t think of anyone better than him” to take those photos because “he’s a romantic at heart.”
The couple also said that they are invited to the May 19 royal wedding—though, as guests, not as photographers, for the big day.
