Pass the tissues. Devoted This Is Us viewers are still attempting to move past the devastating revelation behind Jack Pearson’s death, which was finally shared on Sunday, February 4, in an episode fittingly entitled “Super Bowl Sunday.”
Following the emotionally-exhausting episode, This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman spoke out this week about what to expect from the upcoming storyline, which will feature Kate’s wedding to Toby. With such events ahead, the show creator also hinted that the bride’s late father (played by Milo Ventimiglia) could pay a visit to his daughter Kate (Chrissy Metz) in dreams—particularly surrounding her wedding.
“We have a lot of Kate and Toby wedding stuff building that is a big high point for the rest of our season,” Fogelman noted to Glamour of the final three episodes in season 2. “We have the bachelor party, bachelorette party, [the] wedding, so we have a lot of stuff like that headed our way.” The magazine editor then noted that there needs to be a dream sequence of Jack walking Kate down the aisle on the day of her wedding.
“Well, you might…” Fogelman said. “You’re not exactly right, but you could actually be in a place where something like that could happen.”
Dreams and hallucinations, according to the show creator, have an important role and bearing on the series. “There’s a lot of emotions [about that idea] because if you’ve lost someone tragically, you dream about them a lot,” he said. “There’s a lot of different ways that can happen.”
The likelihood of seeing the late Pearson patriarch in present day is a possibility as well. “We play with a lot of things around time and memory and what could have been, so I think that’s definitely a possibility,” he added. “There’s a lot of emotions [about that idea] because if you’ve lost someone tragically, you dream about them a lot. There’s a lot of different ways that can happen.”
