That’s skill! Regina Wyllie is the latest wedding photographer to make a name for herself — and it’s because at 9 years old, she has an extraordinary talent. The young shutterbug from Scotland became a viral sensation after pictures she took at a wedding this spring were revealed online, and her proud father, Kevin Wyllie, of KGS Photography, opens up to The Knot about his daughter’s incredible passion and gift.
“She started picking up my cameras when she was 3, and started asking questions about photography,” Kevin reveals. “When she was 6, I noticed that she was taking some really good photos and clearly had an eye for it. And that was also when she started asking to tag along on shoots.”
Regina has become such a force that brides and grooms across Scotland are requesting she capture their weddings. The imaginative youngster, however, doesn’t just focus her lens on one genre of creative craft. “She loves all forms of art, and spends a lot of time painting, drawing as well as on her photography,” Kevin tells The Knot. “She’s one of the top performers in her class and also competes in swimming and ice skating competitions. She’s a reasonably quiet girl, who just likes getting on with her schoolwork.”
For a “quiet girl,” Regina is far from timid when it comes to her photography. “Behind the camera, she is super confident and doesn’t let anything bother her,” Kevin tells The Knot. “We recently shot a pre-concert event at a Rod Stewart event, with several hundred VIPs in attendance, as well as some celebrities. Regina performed like a wee trooper. Better than some adults I’ve worked with in the past.”
The clients are compliant too. “She gives a little guidance when posing and people are usually quite willing to comply,” says Kevin. “I guess they just accept her requests, probably a little easier from a child than an adult?”
After her story went viral, many skeptics and critics were quick to doubt Regina’s abilities. In fact, they said the images were strong due to photo manipulation and external guidance, which Kevin quickly shut down. “Regina is learning to edit using Lightroom,” he tells The Knot. “I sit beside her and offer some guidance, but she does the editing and decides what she likes and what she doesn’t.”
Kevin concludes that seeing Regina emerge as a viral photographer has been a gift to him as a parent. He says the biggest boost has been “watching her confidence grow.”
“She realizes that it isn’t just mum and dad telling her that she’s got a talent for it,” he says.
