It has been five short months since Abby Elliott’s writer boyfriend, Billy Kennedy, asked her to marry him in the most romantic of ways. Following their sweet proposal story, the couple wasted no time jumping into wedding planning mode.
The 28-year old Odd Mom Out star is currently in the thick of wedding planning madness. The Knot caught up with the talented bride-to-be as she puts the finishing touches on her dream day.
Did Elliott and Kennedy start planning right after their engagement? “Kind of,” she shares. “We were just like, ‘When should we get married?’ [We] are really excited to get married. He has a couple of friends that are getting married in October. So all of October was already taken. Some August was taken because, you know, this time in our lives everyone is getting married, and so were just like, ‘What about September?’ Okay, this date. We just kind of picked the date. It’s in September at my parents’ house. We are really excited.”
To get started, Elliott started brainstorming the color scheme and enlisted the help of vendors who work near her parents’ house in Connecticut. “I definitely am attracted to drama and dramatic colors.” she says. “I like contrasting, unique colors. That’s what I’m thinking for flowers. We are using a flower company in Old Saybrook, Connecticut called Marvel Floral. Our planner is great: Sarah True at True Events out of Connecticut as well. So it’s all coming together.”
Because the bride and groom-to-be lead busy lives, Elliott is relying on her wedding planner to make it easier. “She’s great,” Elliott says. “She knows great people, [a] great bicoastal photographer, [Leila Brewster]. She knows what she’s doing for sure, so it’s good.”
Elliott has also relied on support from her mom and sister, who helped her track down the perfect wedding dress. “I got my dress,” she shares. “I’m really, really excited. I love it. It’s not something I would have been drawn to right away, but after trying it on it just felt right.”
“I went multiple times, and I went to different places,” Elliott recalls. “I went with friends; I went alone. I just definitely wanted to see what I would pick out by myself, and this was the dress I picked out by myself. Then I brought my mom and my sister.”
Has Elliott’s fiance been helping with the planning too? “He is,” she tells us. “Yeah, he is very helpful. He’s got good taste. We’re both Catholic, so we are going to be having a Catholic ceremony in a church… the same church I had my first communion at, so we are both excited about that. Our parents are happy.”
So, did the wedding venue influence Elliott’s dress choice? “You feel like it’s a cathedral like Julie Andrews in Sound of Music,” she explains. “Yeah it did, it definitely did. I’m thinking of altering a few things on the dress to make it more unique to me.”
As for bridesmaids dresses, Elliott let her bridal party help give suggestions. “We’ve been exchanging emails with dresses,” she tells The Knot. “They are going to have a say in whatever dresses we pick, too.”
Elliott’s bridal party includes some family members. “Bridey is my maid of honor,” she shares about her sister. “And Billy’s sister Maria is in the [bridal] party as well. I have eight, and he has eight, too. Big crew. Fun bachelorette [party].”
What’s in store for Elliott’s bachelorette celebration? A trip to Nashville! “I really love that city; it’s so fun,” she tells us. “I love the music there and the bar scene. It’s unlike any other place. We can’t wait to eat barbecue and go to honky tonks.”
Elliott isn’t shy to admit that she wants her sister to plan the bachelorette party. But does she want the festivities to be a surprise? “No, I want to know what’s going to happen,” she admits. “But I just don’t want to plan any more than I have to already.”
With just a few months until becoming Mrs. Billy Kennedy, we asked the bride-to-be if she has a honeymoon destination in mind. “We are going to Africa on safari,” she shares. “And then end on a beach somewhere in Mozambique.”
We can’t wait to see what surprises Elliott and Kennedy’s September wedding will bring!
