Adam Levine and model Behati Prinsloo didn’t swipe right, but they have the internet to thank for their marriage.
Prinsloo revealed her elaborate love story with the Maroon 5 frontman to Porter in its latest cover story published Friday, January 11. “I met my husband through a mutual friend,” the Namibian-born model said. “Adam was looking for a girl for a music video that could do some action stuff, and our friend was like, ‘You should meet Behati because she’s a total tomboy and down for anything.’”
The relationship started off professionally. “He emailed me asking if I could do it,” Prinsloo, 30, continued. “I ended up not doing it, but we kept emailing each other. It was such a natural correspondence that we kind of fell in love over email.”
They didn’t meet until a month later when Prinsloo flew from New York to L.A. for a job. “That was the first time we met in person,” she recalled. “I remember walking in: I opened the door, and it was the classic moment where the light shines into the dark studio and everyone turned to look at me. He had boxing gloves on and he came to hug me—it was so awkward. Then he took me for dinner and we talked for hours and had the best time. It was love at first sight, it was crazy.”
Their relationship included a few bumps along the way. “We broke up for two months, realized that it was the worst decision,” Prinsloo confessed of their 2013 split. (In between, Levine dated model Nina Agdal.) “Then [we] got back together, got engaged and got married,” Prinsloo concluded. “It was a wild ride!”
The pair got engaged in conjunction with their reconciliation with Levine, 39, proposing with a vintage ring from the 1930s.
Their actual wedding was a top-secret occasion with planners Yifat Oren and Stefanie Cove carefully arranging details at Flora Farms in Los Cabos, Mexico. Actor Jonah Hill, a childhood friend of Levine’s, officiated the nuptials. The pair now share two children.
“I am so lucky it’s easy to balance work and kids because my husband was born and raised [in LA]—he has a whole family here: grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins,” she told Porter. “It’s really amazing to know that when I leave the kids for a day or two, they are surrounded with so much family.”
