But she was so serious. Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer were newly-engaged when they attended Ellen DeGeneres’ star-studded 60th birthday party in February, but it turns out that nobody believed the couple in that particular moment.
“Everyone thought you were kidding,” DeGeneres told Schumer on April 18.
“Because celebrities are supposed to be quiet when they’re getting married,” Schumer said of her reverse psychology tactics. “And we got engaged that morning. So we were going around [and saying], ’We’re getting married!’”
The actress and the chef went on to share the news with a slew of guests including Pink, Pharrell, and “the mother of dragons… Kris Jenner.” When Schumer turned to speak to DeGeneres, the beloved talk show host was having the time of her life.
“You were on the dance floor and you were in the zone,” Schumer said to the birthday girl. Instead, she went on to reveal her engagement to “everybody who would listen… the caterers and the valets.”
Jokes aside, Schumer eventually texted DeGeneres with the news. The comedienne and Fischer, whose family runs Beetlebung Farm in Martha’s Vineyard, married two days later on the terrace of a private home in Malibu. Stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Larry David and Jake Gyllenhaal attended the festivities, though DeGeneres was unable to attend the nuptials due to work.
“We’ve known each other about a year,” Schumer elaborated of her husband. “We had been living together for about five months. We knew?”
Now, she’s a proud wife. “I’m so married!” Schumer gushed Wednesday. “He’s a chef—I’m brilliant. How smart am I?” she joked. “He’s the real deal. Really delicious, wonderful, and also he’s cool. I guess I’ll get to know him in the coming months.”
