Andy Samberg, star of FOX’s Golden Globe winning detective comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, visited The Ellen Degeneres Show on Friday, December 11 to chat about exchanging wedding anniversary gifts with his wife musician Joanna Newsom.
After complimenting the “funny and clever” comedian on his 2015 Emmy Awards hosting talent and endorsing him by saying, “he should be the host every year,” Ellen congratulated Samberg, 37, on his marriage to Newsom, 33. She then asked how long he and his wife had been together before tying the knot.
“I better get this right,” he joked with Degeneres before solidifying his response with the proper numbers. “Five years, five years and then married two.” When the daytime talk show host asks Samberg if he remembers the date of his anniversary, the funnyman proudly announces, “I do. We’ve had two and I remember both.”

Samberg and Newsom celebrated their two year anniversary on September 21, 2015 and the couple have decided to keep their anniversary gift-giving ideas a bit more traditional.
“We did the thing where you do the gifts where there’s the thing it has to be made of for the year,” he shared with Degeneres, referring to the list of more traditional gift material suggestions for wedding anniversaries.
“And the first year it’s paper,” Samberg added, with Degeneres suggesting the second year material of cotton.
“Cotton. Yeah so cotton. I got her a Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer sweatshirt,” Samberg says of his second anniversary gift to his wife Newsom. For the first year’s gift, he shared, “and paper I wrote on a piece of paper we can buy that table that you want.”
“It was either that or buying a paper table,” he joked.
“Well you made the right choice,” Degeneres quipped back.

The couple married on September 21, 2013 in front of an audience of actors, musicians and Saturday night Live celebrities like Adam Sandler and SNL’s executive producer Lorne Michaels. They walked the red carpet at the 67th Annual Emmy Awards, of which Samberg was the host, the day before their second wedding anniversary.
When Degeneres asked in a final question about Samberg’s married life, “That’s really exciting though isn’t it?” the former SNL cast member agreed, “Yeah it’s great,” eyeing a picture of he and Newsom behind him saying, “There we are. That’s me and my wife.”
