Life after The Bachelor. Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell fell in love on season 20 of ABC’s popular reality series, but they’re learning real-life romance after the final rose. The engaged couple is once again documenting their lives for reality cameras on their Bachelor spin-off, Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After? Following the October 11 premiere of the Freeform docu-series, The Knot recaps the highlights from the premiere.
Back to Where it All Began…
Ben reflects on the Bachelor moments that brought him together with Lauren, including a helicopter ride, a romantic hot tub scene, countless rose ceremonies, and finally, his heartfelt proposal. “Lauren was the first one out of the limo on the first night, and the rest is history,” Ben reminisces.
Settling Down in Colorado
After the finale aired, Lauren moved to Ben’s hometown of Denver, Colorado, where they’ve been building a life together and attempting to break away from Bachelor Nation. While they’re determined to move forward, strangers approach the couple frequently to ask about the show and their relationship, while Lauren struggles with the ongoing topic of her fiance’s ex, JoJo Fletcher.
After Ben broke-up with JoJo before proposing to Lauren on the season 20 finale, it was announced that the Texas beauty would be the next Bachelorette. Due to her mix of emotions, Lauren felt the need to take a break from “the Bachelor world,” so Ben and Lauren chose not to watch JoJo’s season.
On their way home from a routine trip to the grocery store, Ben receives a call from JoJo’s Bachelorette producer, who asks if Ben and Lauren would be willing to make an appearance at JoJo’s After the Final Rose special and offer her relationship advice.
Lauren is concerned that negative feelings may resurface if they attend the on-screen event. She also worries that Ben may realize he still has feelings for JoJo. Ben and Lauren decide to have a Bachelorette marathon and watch all of JoJo’s season. As they watch, there are awkward moments, but snuggles, pizza, and Chinese food appear to keep the couple content.
Haley and Emily to the Rescue
Lauren meets her Bachelor friends, Haley and Emily Ferguson, for lunch. They discuss the invitation to JoJo’s After the Final Rose episode, and the twins tell their friend it may not be so bad.
Later, Lauren tells Ben she would like to make his house more homelike, with the inclusion of new furniture. While Ben is at work, Haley and Emily go toilet shopping with Lauren. They remove Ben and Lauren’s current toilet, and Ben comes home to three women (but no toilet!) in his bathroom.
Ben encourages the ladies to take it easy while he installs the new toilet. Lauren explains that her fiance is a “sucker for a DIY project.”
Ben takes Lauren out for a romantic night on the town. “No distractions, no drama… Just my beautiful girl and me,” he says as they walk together.
But during dinner, JoJo calls Ben to ask he and Lauren out for lunch following the After the Final Rose episode. Ben says yes, and Lauren is annoyed that he made the decision without her.
JoJo’s Happy Ending
Lauren is nervous as she and Ben prepare to walk onstage for JoJo’s special. She explains that she only agreed to come because Ben wanted to. Ben is irritated with Lauren for not speaking up sooner, but before they have a chance to discuss it, they’re ushered to their seats.
After it’s revealed that JoJo chose Jordan Rodgers on the Bachelorette finale, Chris Harrison asks Ben and Lauren to give the couple a piece of advice. Ben encourages the duo to “support each other” and “love each other well.” There is tension between Ben and Lauren after the exchange.
As they drive to meet JoJo and Jordan for lunch, Lauren admits she’s dreading the reunion. Ben, however, insists that having lunch together is a good idea.
“A million things could go wrong at lunch today,” Lauren sighs. “And I am worried about every single one of those things.”
Tune in to Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After, airing Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform.
