Wedding season may be behind us, but brides-to-be everywhere will soon be showing off that post-engagement glow! The holidays are the perfect time to don a little extra sparkle, and for many lucky ladies, that means a new engagement ring. If you’re in need of some inspiration, do we have a treat for you! Let’s take a look at the sweetest holiday movie engagements of all time; they’re sure to make you swoon…
1. While You Were Sleeping
In one of the most romantic movie moments of all time, Jack Callaghan asks Lucy Moderatz to marry him by dropping an engagement ring in the token tray at the booth where she works.
Some men choose to propose to their girlfriends in private, but not Jack. Jack, played by Bill Pullman, proposes to Sandra Bullock’s character, Lucy, while the couple is cheered on by his family.
His simple, “Marry me?” has brought instant tears to the eyes of romantics everywhere since the movie came out in 1995.
2. When Harry Met Sally
After initially despising one another, Harry Burns and Sally Albright become best friends. The two get into an argument which threatens their friendship, but Harry, played by Billy Crystal, professes his love for Meg Ryan’s character, Sally, at a New Year’s Eve party.
After listing all of the things he loves about her, Sally lets her defenses down when Harry delivers one of the most romantic movie lines ever… “I came here tonight because when you realize you wanna spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
The movie may have been made in 1989, but this moment continues to tug at our heartstrings.
3. Love Actually
This movie proves that love has a language of its own. English writer Jamie falls for Aurélia, who lives in France. Once he goes back to England, Jamie, played by Colin Firth, begins learning Portuguese and Lúcia Moniz’s character, Aurélia, starts to study English.
Jamie returns to France, gathering people in the street before entering the restaurant where Aurélia works. In a touching Christmas proposal, the Englishman proclaims his love in broken Portuguese, and Aurélia responds in broken English, “Thank you. That will be nice. Yes is being my answer.” Everyone claps and cheers, and Jamie acknowledges, “You learned English.” “Just in cases,” Aurélia responds.
Their kiss is what engagement dreams are made of, and although this movie was released back in 2003, it still has our hearts.
4. Miracle on 34th Street
All that Dorey Walker’s daughter, Susan, wants for Christmas is “a house, a brother, and a dad.” She refuses to believe in Santa Claus until her wishes are granted.
After a failed proposal attempt with a gorgeous diamond ring, Bryan Bedford, played by Dylan McDermott, finally wins the heart of Dorey, Elizabeth Perkins’ character. The magic begins to unfold when little Susan, played by Mara Wilson, sees the reflection of her mother’s sparkling engagement ring on Christmas morning. She gives her mom and new dad a big hug. Her three wishes are granted, resulting in a holiday happily-ever-after.
This 1994 love story is a must-see classic for couples and families alike.
