A Kansas woman named Heidi Mann recently caused a ruckus on the internet after her friend, Tammi Sauer, shared images of Mann repurposing her totally ’90s bridesmaid dress in a hilarious photo shoot.
The fun idea kicked off when children’s book author Sauer decided to commemorate her 22-year anniversary to her high school prom date, Ron, with a few throwback photos from her Victoria, Kansas, wedding. The date: June 17, 1995.
Among the pictures was one fantastic shot of the bride and groom and their entire bridal party all lined up on the church steps. Sauer’s bridesmaids dresses were, admittedly, very tied to the times.
“In high school, I was a huge fan of the Jessica McClintock prom dress,” Sauer tells The Knot. “I still own two of them and actually wore one a few years back. Long story. Anyway, when I saw that there was a real deal pattern to make a Jessica McClintock gown, well, I seriously had no choice. The best part was I got to pick out the details. I was sure that an off-the-shoulder burgundy gown made from miles of brocade fabric and topped with a white lacy/crochet-y thing would be the dream dress.”
In her post, Sauer added a tiny note: “Sorry about those dresses, ladies.”
Mann, a college friend of Sauer’s and one of her beaming bridesmaids from the photo, saw the post online and decided to have some fun. “I was reading her post and I was laughing just thinking about it,” Mann tells The Knot. “I knew she’d find it hilarious.”
Mann then dutifully donned the 20-year-old dress and staged a photo shoot at her home, doing things like watering the plants, reading a book and picking up toys while wearing the dress around the house. (Her kids took the photos).
“My mom was awesome enough to keep them for me until about five years ago, when she finally decided she’d had enough of them hanging in her basement,” Mann tells us. “I’ve kept them all this time because they have great memories attached to them… [The Jessica McClintock dress] was very popular at the time and obviously Tammi had excellent taste. I’d expect nothing less. If you’ve read Mary Had a Little Glam, you know she is clearly a fashion genius.”
Even prior to her photo shoot, Mann would occasionally don a bridesmaid dress for her family’s entertainment. “Over the years, I’ve been known to randomly put one on,” she says, “and join whatever the family is doing, and act like it’s completely normal to be wearing a bridesmaids dress. Of course we all just crack up.”
“I laughed so hard I cried,” Sauer tells The Knot. “While Heidi and I are in touch through Facebook and email, we haven’t seen each other in years. We hope to remedy that soon. All I know for sure is I will be packing my wedding dress for the reunion.”
