Picture-perfect party. Olympian Carli Lloyd says everything about her beachfront wedding in Mexico went as planned. The professional soccer player—who married her high school sweetheart, Brian Hollins, on November 4—shares exclusive details and photos from the emotional day with The Knot.
“I just slowly started planning,” says Lloyd. “With the help of a travel agent and an [on-site] wedding planner.”
While searching for the appropriate wedding venue the couple decided on the Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa in Puerto Morelos, Mexico. “We wanted an intimate feel to the resort,” she says. Their asks also included a venue that had “a great reputation for doing weddings,” in addition to a kid-friendly locale that offered a nice beach and pool.
The couple exchanged vows in front of 79 of their closest friends and family members. The soccer star’s longtime attorney and friend, John Johnson, officiated the nuptials, which the bride says was emotional for all witnesses.
“We both cried during the reading of our vows—we had everyone at our wedding in tears,” Lloyd tells The Knot.
The bride, 34, stunned in a strapless gown from couture designer Matthew Christopher’s Fall 2016 collection. It wasn’t Lloyd’s first time wearing a piece by Christopher, who previously dressed the athlete on the red carpet of the 2015 ESPY Awards. At the time, Lloyd had just captivated the country during the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
“She tried on a few, but she knew that the Isabel was her dress,” the designer tells The Knot. “Girls sometimes gravitate and they know, right? Think about what she does [for a living]. She has to be calculated and direct and on it, so she wasn’t all over the place. She knew by looking at it—and she’s got a great figure.”
The groom, 32, looked handsome in a slim-fitting suit that accented the coral bridesmaid dresses. The bride asked three family members and two of her best friends from high school to stand by her side during the ceremony.
“We wanted something flattering so we made a trip up to Bella Bridesmaids in New York City and tried on a bunch of styles,” the bride notes. “I wanted something flattering and Amsale was the one. My maid of honor mentioned that coral would look pretty.”
Lloyd and Hollins opted for coral and burlap hues with gold touches for their breezy, beachfront “I dos.” At the reception, the pair chose light wood chairs and tables to enhance the tropical experience. There, Lloyd changed into a sexy, leg-baring custom design by Christopher—suitable for dancing of course.
The couple exited the intimate fiesta in an illuminated path of sparklers held up by their guests.
“This was the best day of our lives,” Lloyd told The Knot. “Even after 16 years of being together, I fell more in love with him on our wedding day … I love the person he is—the person he’s become.”
