The brighter the star, the higher the price tag. A new trend report by 77 Diamonds reveals the average cost of celebrity engagement rings.
The independent British jeweler came up with the statistic after reviewing a pool of 100 high-profile engagements from recent years—auditing everything from Kate Middleton’s 12-carat sapphire stone to Kim Kardashian’s 15-carat diamond—before concluding that the average price tag of a celeb diamond is a staggering $1.29 million. (Take into account that the national average spend for an engagement ring was $6,163, according to The Knot 2016 Real Weddings Study.)
The celeb engagement ring trend report, released Wednesday, August 30, reviewed four key factors—cut, carat, metal and style. The findings were then unpacked into sections: Celebrity ring trends, proposal times and locations, first vs. second marriages, and money matters. See the fascinating breakdown below.
Metals: From 2013 to 2015, platinum was a popular metal for celebs. However, that shifted in 2016 with the soaring popularity of white gold in 2016, which was replaced by yellow gold in 2017.
Cut: The oval-cut diamond was a celeb favorite in 2013 and 2014, but that has since been replaced by the emerald-cut.
Carat: The cost per carat has changed drastically since 2014 according to 77 Diamonds. Celebs are now spending significantly more on the quality of a diamond as opposed to other factors.
Time of year: Like most Americans, the majority of celebs choose to propose around the holidays, or what we refer to as Proposal Season at The Knot. Peak engagement months for the stars included August, December and January. Think Serena Williams, Kacey Musgraves, and other recent stars who got engaged right around the holidays.

First vs. Second Marriages
There is a difference in cost when it comes to first and second marriages. First-time celeb spouses spent an average of three years together before getting engaged. The cost of the ring for these couples was around 0.39 percent of the spender’s total net worth.
Interestingly enough, second timers spent significantly more money on the ring—about 6 times more to be precise—setting them back on average at around $3.5 million.
Money can’t buy you love is another big takeaway from the repot. The average cost of the ring for still-married star couples was close to $632,000, while the average for couples who have since split was significantly higher at $1 million.
Finally, it’s still pricey to be a celeb. In order to even be eligible to appear in the survey, the ring price had to be valued at a minimum of $363,000.
