This weekend, Chance the Rapper will marry fiancée Kirsten Corley, so the artist got rather nostalgic Wednesday, March 6, as he recalled the beginning stages of his love story with his future wife.

“Storytime. A thread on how I met my wife,” the Chicago rapper tweeted alongside a throwback photo of his fiancée. He then launched into the first time he met Corley, which happened to be at an office party that their parents had attended when they were kids.

“I was 9 yrs old at the time,” wrote Chance (nee Chancelor Johnathan Bennett). “So I was prolly oblivious to what was going on and had no say in how I spent my evenings, anyway. That being said I was probably playing a gameboy in a corner or eating candy, initially unimpressed by my surroundings.”

Then, the crowd was asked to clear the floor as a trio of girls—Corley included—performed along to Destiny’s Child’s “Independent Women.” He recalled, “All three heads begin to raise slowly in unison. They look like angels.”

“Now I’m locking eyes with the prettiest girl [I’ve] ever seen in my almost-a-decade of life on earth,” he continued. “I really shouldn’t even say locked eyes cause really, I was just staring at her.”

At the time, Bennett had danced competitively in school performances, so his father nudged him to join the girls on the floor. The enamored, 9-year-old future star, however, refused. “Young me was shy,” he recalled. “This wasn’t the time or place. Not just because it wasn’t my party, not because it was their moment to dance, not even cause I was nervous about dancing in front of folks. It’s cause I knew I was gonna marry that girl.”

“So I shook my head with anxiety, moved to the back of the crowd and never even introduced myself,” he said. Fast forward 16 years, and the couple now shares a child together and will marry this week.

“This wknd is the time, and the place is my wedding,” he concluded. “I’m gonna dance with my wife because this is my destiny.”
