They certainly did it their own way. While some couples like to vary their anniversary celebrations with a range of different vacation spots and new restaurants to mark their love, one married couple has consistently experienced the joys of going to Burger King—every year for the last 50 years.
The couple, Lloyd and Sandi Howard from Monroe, New Jersey, first unexpectedly had an anniversary dinner meal at the fast food chain in June 1969, after being late to a show in New York City. The next year, they were en route to a destination and decided to have Burger King for lunch.
“I forget where we were going, but it was around lunchtime, and we realized that it just happened to be our anniversary,” Lloyd told the Today show. “We just figured, maybe for good luck, that we’d just keep going back on our anniversary.”
For the following 48 years, the couple adorably kept the tradition in some form. Sandi said there was one year when she was sick, and her husband went out and brought the Burger King meals home.
Ahead of their 50th anniversary, one of the couple’s daughters Tracy Gorelczenko orchestrated a big surprise. When the pair arrived for their meal, they were greeted by their kids and their grandchildren. “They’d never met us at Burger King before,” Sandi told the Today show. “It was a total surprise.”
To mark their monumental anniversary, the couple ordered Whoppers.
With five decades of marriage, both Sandi and Lloyd had advice. “Try to keep up communication,” she expressed, while he added: “Just stay out of the same room.”
