The season of giving is definitely upon us. Brad and Jessica Bonds got married on Saturday, December 15, in Orlando, but in lieu of asking for wedding gifts, the generous newlyweds gave their guests and their loved ones a chance to give back by continuing a tradition that they’ve maintained since they first started dating.
The couple stuffed red envelopes with $10 for each of their guests, encouraging their loved ones to go on a shopping spree to help kids in need. In fact, to kick off their marriage, the newlyweds took their entire wedding party to Target to go on a shopping spree for toys that could be donated to the charity Toys for Tots.
(Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps that brings toys to children whose parents can’t afford to buy them gifts.)
According to the pair, their guests ended up spending way more than that.
“It’s something that has been a tradition for us, like, ever since we started dating,” Jessica told WESH. In fact, the pair began the annual tradition of holiday giving on their very first date seven years ago.
According to Brad, he knew shortly after meeting Jessica that she was the one, and so he wanted to introduce her to one of his family’s traditions right off the bat.
“So we pulled in the parking lot of Target,” Brad said. “I explained my parents have always made Christmas special for me. … [and] if we can make some kids smile on Christmas, didn’t matter if it was one day, or a relationship, it was successful.”
Brad’s best man, Eric LaRoche, praised the couple for their thoughtful shopping spree, telling WESH, “I think it’s wonderful. I’ve never seen this done before. It’s a great benefit for all the kids. There are so many that are in need.”
Added Brad of inducting his now-wife and friends into the holiday tradition: “I have the most amazing wife on the planet, so if we [are] able to give back and share our blessing with others, then what better can we do on our wedding day?”
