Dan + Shay on Their ‘Bachelorette’ Performance: JoJo and Luke “Were Very Steamy as We Were Singing”

Tell us everything! Country duo Dan + Shay, who performed their new single, “From the Ground Up,” on the June 7 episode of The Bachelorette, stopped by The Knot on the same day their episode aired, and revealed what it was like to film for ABC’s beloved reality series.

According to the Obsessed singers, producers were the ones to initiate contact. “[They] heard that song, and they were like, ‘This is perfect! This is awesome, and we can incorporate it in the show,’” Dan Smyers told The Knot following his performance for staffers at XO Group’s NYC headquarters. “We were like, ‘Man, this is really cool.’ I mean, it’s a different experience … We’d never done anything like that.”

The duo knew nothing about the logistics prior to filming. “They didn’t give us any info, literally,” Dan shared. “Like, we were just in the dark. Because they knew we’d probably be tweeting about it.” (As witnessed on Tuesday night’s episode, Dan + Shay serenaded JoJo Fletcher — and a packed audience at the Greensburg Palace Theater in Pennsylvania — following the Bachelorette’s romantic one-on-one date with Luke Pells. The two slow-danced and JoJo even planted a few kisses on the West Point grad.)

“It was something else!” Shay Mooney chimed in. “It was awesome! The whole experience was crazy. Kind of like Dancing With The Stars. There were people dancing in front of us as we were singing, which was very nerve-wracking. It was more like Dancing With the Stars because if we messed up, then their whole routine was off. It was pretty scary.” (The duo performed last month on DWTS during Artem Chigvintsev and Witney Carson’s performance.)

Like the rest of the nation, Dan and Shay were intrigued by JoJo’s interaction with Luke. “They were right in front of us while we were up on the stage. It was interesting to see that,” Shay noted. “You could tell they were very steamy as we were singing. It was something else!”

Dan added: “She’s beautiful. That’s an apparent fact. She was sweet. She walked in, and we were performing, and she came right up, gave us hugs, and said she was a big fan of our music. So that was good. We were nervous that the cut of the shot was going to be her saying, ‘The date was going so well… until he took me to a concert.'”

Like JoJo, the producers were equally good to the singers. “They were really kind,” Dan told The Knot. “We were like, ‘Can we just do a full show?’ You know, we were just taping like one or two songs for the show, and they were like ‘Absolutely!’ So they let us do a full show. They let us bring in all of our production, which was crazy. Lots of lights and ramps and the whole deal. They were awesome! They were like, ‘Go for it!”

“They were really good to us,” Dan concluded. “It was great exposure for the song, so we appreciate them having us on the show.”

Dan + Shay are currently on tour for their album, Obsessed, which features their popular new single “From the Ground Up.”

“It was a unique experience, but great exposure for the song and great people who were working on the show,” they concluded. “We appreciate them having us.”
