Michelle Williams knows marriage. The Dawson’s Creek alum revealed to Vanity Fair in its new cover story released Thursday, July 26, that she secretly married indie musician Phil Elverum following what she describers as a “very sacred and very special” beginning to their love story.
The actress told the magazine that the pair married in the Adirondacks before only a select group of friends and family members including their daughters. (Williams is mom 12-year-old daughter Matilda, her baby girl with the late Heath Ledger. Elverum shares a 3-year-old daughter with his late wife.)
“I never gave up on love,” the Blue Valentine star told the mag. “I always say to Matilda, ‘Your dad loved me before anybody thought I was talented, or pretty, or had nice clothes.’”
She and Elverum now live in Brooklyn, New York. “Obviously I’ve never once in my life talked about a relationship,” Williams added. “But Phil isn’t anyone else. And that’s worth something. Ultimately the way he loves me is the way I want to live my life on the whole. I work to be free inside of the moment. I parent to let Matilda feel free to be herself, and I am finally loved by someone who makes me feel free.”
Williams’ love story was rather tragic following the 2008 death of Ledger. Her husband has also grappled with loss after losing his wife, Geneviève Castrée, to pancreatic cancer in 2015.
“Don’t settle. Don’t settle for something that feels like a prison, or is hard, or hurts you,” she says. “If it doesn’t feel like love, it’s not love.”
