He would truly like to thank the Academy. Oscars director Glenn Weiss won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special on Monday night, and his acceptance speech was accompanied by another integral moment when he proposed to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen.
Following the moving live proposal, Weiss greeted photographers and reporters with his Emmy Award backstage. It was there that he said he had “no plan B” if he didn’t win the Emmy. “I suppose [I would have proposed at] the ball, or In-N-Out Burger, which is like our staple after award shows,” Weiss said (according to People).
Instead, Weiss popped the question during the broadcast prompting adorable reactions from celebs filling the seats, including Sterling K. Brown. “You can’t come in and plan this,” he said Monday night. “It became [a] thought, and the thought picked up steam. That’s how we got here. The timing just lined up very nicely, and it was a really magical moment.”
Overall, the toughest part of planning was having the weight of a family heirloom rest in his pocket.
“This is the ring that my dad put on my mom’s finger 67 years ago,” Weiss said during his speech. “And to my sister and brothers: I didn’t swipe it. Dad knows I have it, OK? Jan, I want to put this ring that my mom wore on your finger in front of all these people and in front of my mom and your parents watching from above. Will you marry me?”
Svendsen also chimed in Monday night, saying she was blown away by the gesture. “I never expected this. I was shocked,” she expressed. “I was just so grateful that he won, and I really hoped he was going to dedicate the award to his mother, and he did, and then some.”
