It’s been 50 years since Dolly Parton married Carl Dean, and their marriage is still solid.
The 70-year old singer stopped by the Today show on Wednesday, August 24, to promote her 43rd studio album, Pure and Simple. Before taking the stage to perform her 1980 hit song “9 to 5,” Parton caught up with Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie about how she and her husband have kept their marriage strong since 1966.
“They say, ‘How did it last 50 years?'” Parton told the hosts when asked about her milestone wedding anniversary. The beloved country star celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary with her husband, 73, on Memorial Day this past year. “I say, ‘Forty-seven of those years I was gone… Keeps it fresh and new.'”
Parton, who is the most-honored country performer of all time, recalled how she met her husband in her customary light-hearted, humorous way. She explained that she met Dean at the Wishy-Washy laundromat all those years ago.
“I always make jokes… wishy-washy ever since,” Parton said, making Lauer and Guthrie laugh, “but it must be okay. It lasted that long,” she added with a smile.
Back in May, Parton and Dean celebrated their golden anniversary by renewing their wedding vows in Nashville, Tennessee. Prior to the ceremony, the bride shared that her husband “don’t like to do this kind of thing as a rule, but he’s like me: he’s proud we’ve made it 50 years.”
It seems absence will continue to make these lovebirds’ hearts grow fonder. Parton continues her tour through mid-December. Watch her perform Pure and Simple below.
