For Doug Jones, Tuesday night’s victory was twice as sweet for a rather personal reason: December 12 was his 25th anniversary to his wife, Louise Jones.

The Alabama Democrat, who won a seat in the Senate in a stunning upset for its special election, took to the podium shortly after claiming victory on Tuesday night. “December 12 has always been a historic day for the Jones family,” he said as the crowd cheered. “This is, as you know, mine and Louise’s 25th wedding anniversary. I couldn’t have done this without her. The love, the support, the encouragement.”

The couple both took to the stage to mark the astounding win. It has been 25 years since Alabama, a traditionally and staunch GOP state, has elected a Democrat to represent constituents in the Senate.

On his website, Jones expressed his platform and his love for his family while facing off against Roy Moore in a highly-contested election. “My partner in this race and life is my wife Louise,” he expressed. “Louise was raised in Cullman, Alabama and December 12th will not only be the Special Election – it is our 25th anniversary. Our family gives us strength and joy.”

The couple share three grown children.
