Ed Sheeran, the force behind some of the finest contemporary first dance songs at weddings, announced his engagement to Cherry Seaborn this weekend, prompting discussion around the couple’s choice of music at their own nuptials.

Sheeran fans, however, will be surprised to learn that he once shared his pick for “best wedding song,” and it fell outside of his realm of personal hits, which include fan favorites such as “Perfect” and “Thinking Out Loud.”

In an interview with Oprah magazine in July 2017, the Grammy winner revealed his pick as “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison.

“If the bride doesn’t have brown eyes, a lot of the guests probably will,” he mused. “So whenever I sing it, the dance floor goes off.”

In the same piece, Sheeran adorably shared how his ideal summer afternoon involves Seaborn. “Cycling with my girlfriend to her parents’ house,” he replied. “On our way, we’ll stop off at a country pub for a pint of ale and, of course, bangers and mash.”

Sheeran announced the news of his engagement on January 20. “Got myself a fiancé just before new year,” he told fans on social media. “We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well xx.”

The couple, who started dating in 2015, are parents to two cats named Calipo and Dorito.
