In April 2015, Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder surprised their guests with a Southern California wedding under the guise of a housewarming party. Upon arrival at the couple’s home, Reed and Somerhalder’s loved ones were shuttled over to the Tuscali Mountain Inn in Topanga, California, where the bride and groom–fully clad in wedding attire–greeted their stunned guests.

While the overall day came as a surprise to those who witnessed the festivities, the couple had prepared arduously and meticulously for the moment, quietly marking off their wedding checklist in the months ahead. In retrospect, there’s one particular planning element that stands out for the pair.

“Everybody has such a different path and some want to get married right away,” Reed, now the co-founder of jewelry brand Bayou With Love, tells The Knot in an exclusive interview. “When I have friends who are getting married, my wedding day advice is to please make sure you actually bring on a videographer. That’s the advice I give because weddings go by so fast. You’re there to say hi to everybody and you’re there to enjoy the moment—but it’s all a blur. People are talking to you.”

“The best thing we ever did was work with Glass Jar Photography. They’re my all time favorite,” Reed continues. “The team put together a compilation video for us—they can do a 20-second video and you watch it daily, or they can put together a 20-minute mini movie—and that was the most special thing.”

The couple’s stunning outdoor wedding was planned by Andrea Freeman Events and the bride looked resplendent in a custom lace piece by Claire Pettibone. Prior to the occasion, the Twilight actress and the Vampire Diaries actor made one specific promise to each other about the day ahead.

“When Ian and I got married, we made a pact before the wedding that no matter what, we would stand back-to-back and hold hands,” she recalls. “On the wedding night, so many people don’t get to talk to their [significant other]. I found that if you’re at least back-to-back, we got to at least stay connected the whole night.”

Like the details from her wedding, Reed’s decision to stack her rings are very much a personal choice–something the designer has increasingly become aware of since starting Bayou With Love.

“There are days when I wear one simple gold band on that finger,” she muses. “On my engagement ring finger, I wear the seven-ball ring, which is just one of our stacking rings, along with an anniversary ring from Ian, and a ring that my mom and I had made. It’s a simple gold band that we always wear, especially if we’re flying anywhere. I just believe that that finger is so sacred and I love keeping the whole story together.”
