The question is—will she say yes? Rachel Chu knows very little about boyfriend Nick Young’s mysterious family based in Singapore, but the NYU economics professor is suddenly catapulted into the dazzling world of Crazy Rich Asians when he invites her home.
The reason for Nick’s return is primarily to serve as the best man in the wedding of his childhood best friend, Colin Khoo, whose pending wedding is the equivalent of the “Royal Wedding of Asia” within elite social circles that extend far beyond the island. But it isn’t until Rachel actually arrives in Singapore that she becomes fully aware of Nick’s exorbitantly wealthy background–and the burden that accompanies familial responsibility.
However, Nick is hopeful that Rachel will become his wife and straddle this lavish new world, as evidenced in an exclusive new clip from the upcoming romantic comedy.
In the scene from the movie based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling book, Nick (played by Henry Golding) and his childhood best friend Colin (Chris Pang) drink beers on a pontoon as they contemplate marriage. Nick then delightfully pulls out the ring he’s prepared specifically prepared for Rachel, an art deco-inspired piece carefully housed within a Cartier box.
While Colin is initially excited for his friend, reality sinks in and he wonders how an engagement would impact Rachel (Constance Wu). “Have you ever thought what your relationship would be like if you got married?” he speculates. “You’re Nicholas Young. You’re untouchable, you always have been… but Rachel’s not.”
Will Nick even propose to Rachel? Watch the scene above and catch Crazy Rich Asians in theaters everywhere on August 15.
