Gilmore Girls’ Kelly Bishop Wanted Lauren Graham to Be With Peter Krause Long Before They Started Dating

Mom is always right! Following the stellar release of the Gilmore Girls revival on Netflix over Thanksgiving weekend, actress Lauren Graham shared some surprising new details about her own personal love life in her memoir, Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between).

According to Graham, actress Kelly Bishop—who plays the family’s stiff matriarch Emily Gilmore on the beloved series—wanted her on-screen daughter to date actor Peter Krause long before the two fell in love on the set of NBC’s Parenthood. Bishop was notorious in the first season for offering Graham dating advice (in the sweetest way possible, of course).

“In a maternal, protective way,” Graham, 49, reveals in her memoir, according to Vulture. “She found most of my boyfriends at the time lacking, and once told me I needed someone who was more my equal, like ‘that wonderful actor on Six Feet Under.’”

Magically, Krause and Graham both starred on Parenthood years later, but they played siblings on the show. The actor would oftentimes refer to Graham as his sister even off-screen, which befuddled her. “I think he was actually trying to talk himself out of starting anything,” Graham speculates in her book.

Eventually, they fell in love. “At our age we’d probably both been through ‘showmances’ that went south and made work an uncomfortable place to be,” Graham writes. “But ultimately, our mutual wariness gave way — it just sort of happened.”

The couple now lives together in Los Angeles, and they’re able to support each other by working in the same industry. (In fact, Krause had a cameo in the Netflix revival!)

“I mean, he’s really my favorite person to talk to, and he always makes me laugh,” she told People last week. “It’s hard to explain to people when you have a fancy job like being an actor what is challenging about it. So we just kind of have that shorthand, a shared language, which is helpful.”

Graham’s memoir, Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between), is out on Tuesday, November 29. For more details (and potential wedding spoilers!) on the Gilmore Girls revival, read The Knot’s recap here.
