Yikes! In an all new sneak peek of Sunday’s Girls season 5 premiere, we finally get a glimpse into some of Marnie’s pre-wedding preparations and the unfortunate wedding makeup mishaps that fall on the bride on her special day.
A far cry from actress Allison Williams’ flawless wedding style when she tied the knot with Ricky Van Veen back on September 19, her Girls character Marnie is faced with one absolutely shocking bridal makeup “don’t” during the show’s premiere. Way, way too much makeup. It’s up to her bridesmaids Hannah, played by the show’s creator and writer Lena Dunham, and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) to point out the issue before she walks down the aisle to her fiance Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). But will she take their advice?
Perhaps not taking the best approach by mentioning their concerns so candidly in front of Marnie’s makeup artist, Hannah shares that Marnie’s style looks as if she went to Hershey Park in Pennsylvania and vigorously ate chocolate bars (thus getting it all over her face), adding that it looks “a bit shellacked,” while Shoshanna called the makeup out for being “heavy.”
The bride and her beautician are then forced to defend themselves and their thick, dark makeup choices and Marnie explains, “The dress is light so you have to weigh it down with makeup.” Though she seems confident that this is the way it should be, we can certainly see this is a bridal faux pas, and perhaps even a foreshadowing of Marnie and her husband’s mismatched fate.

Though we’re sure Hannah, Shosh and the wild child Jessa (Jemima Kirk) have plenty of words regarding the very un-Marnie wedding makeup, the situation must get straightened out because we’ve been graced with stunning formal photos complete with flower crowns, convertible lilac bridesmaid dresses from twobirds Bridesmaid and far more natural-looking makeup on the bride!
Plus, who can get enough of Williams’ character in that gorgeous white, bohemian v-neck wedding dress by Stone Fox Bride, especially with it’s 1970s-style bell sleeves and floral applique details. Surely an airy, vintage-inspired gown like that doesn’t need to be weighed down by anything!
