Gisele Bundchen doesn’t seem like someone who would startle easily, but the outrageous story that her husband, Tom Brady, told her to set up his proposal sounds like it would definitely leave a lasting impact.
The Brazilian supermodel recently took part in Vogue’s fun 73 Questions series, and in part, she revealed how Brady, 40, popped the question more than a decade ago.
When asked, “What’s the most romantic thing that Tom’s ever done for you?” Bundchen, 37, reminisced about Brady’s proposal.
“When he proposed to me, he made up this whole story [about] how my apartment was flooding,” she said in the video. “And I ran over there to try to fix the situation. When I got there, the whole apartment had candles and rose petals, and then he went down on his knees to propose.”
Bundchen, ever the caretaker, reacted worriedly, fretting over Brady’s knees, still recovering from surgery.
“And I’m like, ‘Get up!’” she continued. “Because he just had surgery and had three staph infections. I’m like, ‘What are you doing?!’ He’s like, ‘I gotta go on my knees.’ I’m like, ‘No, no no! Get up, please.’ So, and here we are.”
Bundchen and Brady met through a mutual friend in 2006 and for Bundchen, it was pretty much love at first sight.
“The moment I saw him, he smiled and I was like, ‘That is the most beautiful, charismatic smile I’ve ever seen,’” she told Vanity Fair in May 2009. She also added that she and Brady have spoken every day since then. Brady proposed to Bundchen in early 2009, and the couple didn’t wait long before exchanging vows before a few close family and friends during a twilight Catholic ceremony in Santa Monica that February.
The pair share two young children together: Benjamin, 8, and Vivian, 5.
When asked during the Vogue video if she had any advice for other married couples, she said that it’s important to “keep it open and loving communication.” Her insider scoop on Brady? “He doesn’t like being barefoot!”
