For Hoda Kotb, there’s no such thing as “too late.” The Today show co-anchor sat down with Ellen DeGeneres on her show Tuesday to chat about everything from her new gig to her adopted baby girl, Haley Joy, to her relationship with her boyfriend, financier Joel Schiffman.

When DeGeneres asked Kotb, 53, whether she and Schiffman, 59, would ever consider getting married now that they are raising a daughter together, the morning talk show host was all smiles.

“Maybe, we might,” she said. “I feel like everything’s great. He’s Haley’s dad. I’m Haley’s mom. We’re together. I feel like there’s not a rush other than we’re old, and if we’re going to do it, we might as well do it. I think it’s fun like this. I don’t mind it. We’re doing our lives. Yeah, I think we’re good this way.”

Kotb and Schiffman have been dating for four years; Schiffman has a daughter of his own from a previous marriage who is now in law school. Talking openly and candidly about the possibility of adoption was something that really solidified their relationship, Kotb said.

“I had thought about having kids for a long, long time,” Kotb explained Tuesday. “But one day I was sitting with my boyfriend and I said to him, ‘I’m going to have to talk to you about something because I can’t push it down anymore, push it away.’ I said, ‘Don’t answer now. Take a day, take a week, take some time. But I want to talk to you about this.’ And he said, ‘OK, what is it?’ And I said, ‘I would like to explore adoption with you.’”

Schiffman’s response was exactly what she needed to hear, Kotb said.

“He looked at me and said, ‘I don’t need a day,’” she said. “And I knew I’d chosen the right man.”
