Joseph Duggar had a lot on his mind at his older sister Joy-Anna’s wedding on Friday, May 26. The 22-year-old reality star brought his then-girlfriend, now-fiancée Kendra Caldwell, to the big family celebration, and about two hours into the reception, he finally knew it was time.
“I was definitely nervous going into it, but I wasn’t afraid that she was going to say no, because she has said, ‘I’m just waiting on you!’” Joseph told People magazine about dropping to one knee in front of all his friends and family. Caldwell was shocked and excited about the proposal, and revealed to the magazine that an anxious Joseph very nearly blew his cover earlier that day.
“He had the ring in his pocket so when I went to go help myself and grab mints out of his pocket, he grabbed at his pocket and I pulled my hand away,” she said. “But then I quickly forgot about it.”
Joseph explained that he had asked his sister Joy-Anna for her blessing prior to carrying out his romantic plan, since it was her wedding. “I asked Joy and Austin a few weeks ago if I proposed to her at the wedding,” he told People. Joseph said that both Joy-Anna and her husband-to-be, Austin Forsyth, encouraged him to go for it.
Joseph and Caldwell first met in church, and the pair announced that they were entering into a formal courtship this past March.
“I’m looking forward to getting to spend more time with Joseph as we take this exciting step toward a new season in life,” Caldwell told People at the time. “It’s a really wonderful moment!”
The newly engaged couple are hoping for a fall wedding, though they tell People they haven’t locked in any definite dates just yet. Joseph and Caldwell would be joining a long list of recent Duggar wedding, including Jinger, who wed her former soccer player fiancé, Jeremy Vuolo, last November, and Joy Duggar, who is now happily Mrs. Forsyth.
