Get those registries ready. Ikea just announced its latest collaboration in partnership with a select group of the brightest artists of our time.
For its 2019 art event, the furniture retailer tapped eight artists to create their own interpretations of rugs, tapping names like Kanye West’s creative director Virgil Abloh, who also leads the menswear division at Louis Vuitton, as well as menswear designer Craig Green.
These forces in the art world each came up with limited-edition concepts, some literally off-the-wall, while others added a literal splash to their art pieces with deeper meaning. “This collection is as eclectic as the artists behind it, featuring a mash up of tapestry art, rug handicraft, avant-garde fashion, street culture and modern design,” Ikea expressed of its Art Event 2019 collab.
“I wanted an ironic take on the traditional attitude to furnishing where the living room is just a showroom, not somewhere you sit,” Abloh said in a release. “The parental ‘don’t ruin the furniture’ kind of thing I think has really impacted how younger people think of furniture.” Abloh’s piece, sure to be a bestselling item, retails at $499.
Design duo Adam Frezza and Terri Chia of Chiaozza co-designed a $349 rendition of a rug. “Inspired by spring time scenes in the deserts of the American southwest, the color blocks, squiggles, daubs and dots of this rug, invite people of all ages to sprawl out, daydream and get lost discovering little moments of play and tactility.”
Prices range from $149 to $499 for the pieces. Start your Ikea registry here, and add even more items to your very own The Knot Registry from multiple retailers.
