The club can’t even handle this right now. Back in 2005, Jenna Dewan Tatum and Channing Tatum were slowly building their careers in Hollywood while working on an upcoming dance movie called Step Up. It was on the set of the film that the acting leads developed feelings for each other, but there were several hindrances preventing the pair from making things official.
The World of Dance judge, 36, recalled the beginning stages of her now-beloved relationship with the Magic Mike actor while stopping by The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday, April 25, where she shared more details about that defining moment when they moved ahead with their romance.
“Chan and I, when we met… He had just gotten out of a relationship and I had just gotten out of one,” the mom of one noted. “So I did the whole, ‘If you want to date other people and be free, that’s totally fine. But we’re not gonna hang out, you know… and ‘watch movies.’ I was like, ‘You have got to figure out what you want, because I know I want to be in a relationship.’”
The two remained in limbo for the next three days. By then, Tatum had gone out one night with the dancers while Dewan Tatum enjoyed a low-key night in. Apparently, the group had a wild night out complete with plenty of tequila, but the actor couldn’t shake Dewan Tatum from his single spree. “He said he had the chance to ‘be free,’ but he couldn’t stop thinking about me,” Dewan Tatum recalled as she started laughing to herself.
While their story isn’t exactly new, it’s a celebrity classic. “He comes down to my hotel room at two in the morning and he’s banging on the door,” she told DeGeneres on Tuesday. “And he’s in his underwear, a sombrero and Ugg boots, and he was like, ‘Let’s do this.’”
Tatum ended up spending the night in Dewan-Tatum’s room, and she slipped out of the hotel early the following morning due to an earlier call time. “I’m getting my hair and makeup done,” she continued, “and somebody goes, ‘We can’t find Channing… He’s not in his room.’”
The actress eventually had to tell a crew member that the actor was actually in her room—and somehow, everyone found out. “He comes onto set and everybody was applauding,” she laughed.
The pair married in July 2009, at the Church Estate Vineyards in Malibu, and they will celebrate their eighth wedding anniversary this summer.
