Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez seem to be the perfect match. In an interview with Today show cohost Savannah Guthrie on Monday, the iconic multi-hyphenate gushed about her fiancé Alex Rodriguez, whom she praised as being her perfect “complement.” She also explained that their upcoming marriage is something she’s been planning for a long time.
“I always planned to get married again,” she shared. (The actress and singer was previously married to Ojani Noa, Cris Judd and Marc Anthony.) “I want to spend my life with somebody. I want to grow old with somebody. I think that’s the goal, right? To find a partner to kind of walk through this crazy thing with.” Now, Rodriguez is helping her dream come true.
“We just complement each other,” the 49-year-old superstar told Guthrie. “He’s super supportive. He allows me to be who I am. … We both have a lot of respect and admiration for each other. And he helps me. He helps me where I’m weak and I help him where he’s weak and he makes me stronger and that’s what it is.”
But their bond isn’t just about mutual support—it’s about mutual interests, experiences and goals too. “We’re very similar as well,” she explained, noting how much they both love their families. “We grew up the same. We kind of both got in the public eye very young. We both had our hard moments in the public eye. But at the same time, we keep coming back. We both have that thing too.”
Lopez and Rodriguez, 43, got engaged less than two months ago during a romantic getaway in the Bahamas. And while the former Yankees shortstop’s decision to drop to one knee on the beach was a surprise to Lopez, his monumental question was not.
“It wasn’t a shock,” she told Guthrie of Rodriguez’s proposal. “We had spoken about it, obviously, but it was a shock that day. I didn’t know it was happening that day.” (Rodriguez popped the question to Lopez at sunset on March 9, presenting her with a stunning 15-carat emerald-cut diamond ring.)
The couple’s kids—Rodriguez’s daughters Ella, 11, and Natasha, 14, and Lopez’s 11-year-old twins, Maximilian and Emme—are excited to start this new chapter together as one family as well. According to Lopez, the four young ones have been “stellar” throughout their relationship. “It’s not an easy thing,” she said of blending families. “But somehow it works really well. There’s just a lot of love there.”
The pair have yet to announce a date or location for their undoubtedly star-studded wedding, though Lopez’s pending North American It’s My Party tour, her first in six years, will likely put wedding planning on hold for a while.
