Even in the early stages of her relationship, actress Jessica Biel knew she would someday marry Justin Timberlake. In fact, she has an email to prove it.
The 7th Heaven alum, 34, appeared late last week on The Late Late Show With James Corden, and shared that the romance started off innocently with plenty of phone calls–and that’s about it!
“We didn’t kiss for a very long time because he was on tour,” she recalled. “And we were talking on the phone, like normal pre-teens do. We were just chatting on the phone for hours. So, we never really kissed for a very long time.”
Despite the physical limitations, Biel felt an unnatural spark (of course!) with the “Mirrors” hitmaker.
“I have this email that is really funny… that I sent to my producing partner,” she revealed to Corden. “It’s literally, like, ‘Okay, I can’t make that meeting so I have to cancel. Also, I know I will marry this man. You can’t tell anybody but your husband.’ …I don’t know what he did that day, but I have this hilarious email.”
The couple first met through mutual friends in 2007—and those phone calls were real. “There was nothing starry about the way we got together. It was very un-Hollywood-esque, in fact,” Timberlake told the Hollywood Foreign Press in 2012. “We met and got talking. Afterwards I asked my friend if I could call her and ask her out. My friend called Jessica and Jessica said yes, and so I called her… I did it the old fashioned way: By telephone.”
“That’s something I learned from both my stepdad and my grandfather,” the actor, now 35, continued. “That there is a thing called chivalry and it doesn’t have to die with the birth of the internet. The way I see it, if you’re asking a girl out on a date, it’s only right to do it in a way that she can hear your voice. I had to be pretty persistent in order to get her to say yes. But I have a fair amount of tenacity and if I want something I stick to it. And in the end, she agreed.”
Biel and Timberlake married in Italy in October 2012, and welcomed their baby son Silas nearly three years later. They were recently one of The Knot picks for 10 celebrity couples at the 2017 Golden Globes.
