J.K. Rowling has just proven that she’s welcome everywhere she goes. The Harry Potter author was recently having lunch at the Prestonfield House in Edinburgh when she was happened upon by two starstruck grooms.
The couple, Nick and John, had just gotten married when they spotted Rowling exiting the building and walking into the parking lot. Wedding photographer Matt Fothergill was with the men when the chance encounter happened.
“[Nick and John] were looking over my shoulder and looking quite excited,” he told Pink News. “Then, they rushed towards me and said in very hushed tones something like, ‘J.K. Rowling is right behind you.’ Then we joked about how cool it would be to have her in a wedding photo.”
Wanting to do right by the grooms, Fothergill “swallowed some serious nerves” and approached Rowling to ask if she might take a photo with the newlyweds.
“She was just delightful from start to finish,” he said. “She turned and smiled, strode over and gave them both the biggest hugs and wished them the greatest health and happiness. It was such a wonderful surreal beautiful moment.”
According to Fothergill, the two men were “bleeping like Beaker from the Muppets” in sheer excitement, and the photographer managed to capture the sweet moment when Rowling embraced then both. The resulting photos, which Fothergill shared to Facebook, show the two men grinning widely.
“We laughed about it for about half an hour afterwards,” Fothergill told Pink News. “Nick’s face in the pictures kind of gave away how starstruck we all were, I think. I actually squealed with delight when she was still within earshot.”
