It takes a village to throw a proper wedding—even if, as in Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s case—the wedding is a whirlwind Vegas affair. The lovebirds shocked friends and fans when they got hitched at the iconic A Little White Wedding Chapel on Wednesday, May 1, shortly after the Billboard Music Awards. Even more surprising? How many of their loved ones were actually in on the surprise!

Around 40 attendees crammed into the chapel, which the couple had rented out from 8 p.m. to midnight to ensure complete privacy. The guest list included celebrity pals like Khalid and DJ Diplo, who documented much of the ceremony via Instagram Live. Though neither of the bride or groom’s parents were present, the other Jonas Brothers, Nick and Kevin, were on hand to act as co-best men.

It was a duty they performed well, according to Jesse Garon, the Elvis impersonator who married the pair.

“They did a very important job,” Garon told Entertainment Tonight, joking, “In case [Joe] passed out, they were supposed to catch him. They did great.”

Garon also revealed that though he had been hired to officiate the wedding a week out from the actual ceremony itself, he wasn’t aware that he’d be marrying two celebrities until just about five minutes before the wedding.

He recognized Jonas as “that guy that sings ‘Cake [by] the Ocean,’” but didn’t know who Turner was because he’s not a Game of Thrones fan.

Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney, the country duo behind Dan + Shay, were also on hand to sing their hit song, “Speechless,” as Turner walked down the aisle. “They sang really good, and then we did our ceremony and then at the end we did a little ‘Viva Las Vegas’ for them,” Garon said. “All the fellas jumped in and they enjoyed the heck out of it. We gave [Joe] some Elvis glasses, and a little bit of advice as he goes on his wedding night. We had a good ol’ time!”

Since Turner’s father wasn’t on hand to walk her down the aisle, the couple improvised and asked another well-known name to fill in: Jonas’s longtime friend and manager, Phil McIntyre, who wore a black suit and tie (and even a top hat!) for the occasion. McIntyre is no stranger to Jonas Brothers weddings either—he served as a groomsman at Nick’s December 2018 wedding to Priyanka Chopra.

Afterward, the couple posed atop a pink Cadillac outside the venue, as is tradition, snapped photos with Garon (in a red Elvis suit, no less), and took off into the night. Back at their hotel, Turner and Jonas kicked off their wedding night right, by jumping into the jacuzzi still wearing their wedding outfits.

Turner and Jonas’s Vegas nuptials make their marriage legal, but they’ll still celebrate with a second ceremony in France this summer.
