Now that’s a Bella-sized ring! WWE superstars John Cena and Nikki Bella got engaged at WrestleMania 33 on Sunday, April 2, solidifying their status as wrestling’s top power couple. The following morning, the newly-engaged couple stopped by the Today show to discuss the very-public proposal and Cena’s decision to finally pop the question after a five-year relationship.
According to Cena, he had been planning to propose for “a long time.”
“As a matter of fact, I told this story last night before I proposed to Nicole,” Cena recalled to Al Roker. “She’s been by my side through a lot of surgeries. I make a joke when you go under anesthesia—you get like 20 minutes when you’re out of it–but you can talk, and you don’t remember what’s going on. But I always tell her, ‘You know what’s going on…. Ask me whatever.’”
In 2015, Bella, who stars on E!’s Total Divas and her own spin-off series, Total Bellas, ended up getting neck surgery. “So, when they put her under, I made sure to be the last one to wheel her into the [operating room],” Cena continued. “I stopped the doctors and I leaned down and asked, ‘Can you hear me?’ She said, ‘Yes.’”
“I said, ‘I have one question for you,'” Cena continued. At that exact moment, he whispered to his future wife, “You know: Someday, I’m going to marry you.”

The Diva, however, didn’t remember that conversation for obvious reasons. On her E! show, she’s mentioned how she would like for Cena to propose. The couple’s sweet relationship has been documented on both reality shows. “For a year and half, she always brings up, ‘When are you going to tell me what we talked about?’” Cena joked on Monday. His future wife finally received her answer on Sunday at WrestleMania in Orlando.

According to Cena, at least one person at WWE knew that he would propose on-stage. “Just because the fact that it is a giant production, there needed to be one other person in the loop,” he noted. The Trainwreck actor proposed after he and Bella won against The Miz and Maryse during a couple’s match.
