Justin Bieber maintained tradition in more than one way with his proposal to Hailey Baldwin. The pop superstar, who presented a dazzling, $200,000 oval-shape ring to the model this weekend, was rather intentional while considering his decision–and he’s in the majority.
According to multiple outlets, Bieber approached Stephen Baldwin in person several weeks ago to request his blessing. “Justin wanted to respect tradition,” a source told Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday. “So a couple weeks ago, while him and Hailey were visiting New York, Justin set aside some time to talk with Stephen.”
Bieber’s approach is perfectly in line with findings published in The Knot’s 2017 Jewelry & Engagement Study, which found that 78 percent of grooms will ask their partner’s family for permission.
A different source told E! News that the Usual Suspects actor “was thrilled to give his permission.”
In fact, Stephen was responsible for introducing Bieber to his daughter back in 2009. At the height of Bieber’s breakout years in music, Baldwin—knowing Hailey was a huge fan—introduced the two at the Today show. The father-daughter duo later attended the Never Say Never premiere where they once again reunited with Bieber on the red carpet.
“Justin and Stephen have always had a close relationship,” the same source told ET. “And Justin wanted to show his future father-in-law how serious he is about his future with Hailey.”
In fact, their common bond is faith. The youngest Baldwin brother is a minister while Bieber and Hailey both attend the same church, Hillsong United. “Justin and Stephen talked about relationships, sacrifice and religion,” the source concluded to ET. “And ultimately Stephen gave Justin his blessing to propose to Hailey. Stephen is very happy for Justin and Hailey.”
The “Sorry” singer proposed in the Bahamas on Saturday with news breaking Sunday. In line with our study, Bieber had a ring ready to go for Hailey when he popped the question. In 2017, 9 in 10 grooms had a ring in hand when popping the question, while 87 percent of grooms reported back that they bent down on one knee.
Both Bieber and Baldwin took to social media to confirm the latest life milestone on Monday night. “Not sure what I did in life to deserve such happiness but I am so utterly grateful to God for giving me such an incredible person to share my life with!” she wrote. “No words could ever express my gratitude.”
Bieber echoed his future wife’s sentiments, writing on Instagram: “You are the love of my life Hailey Baldwin and I wouldn’t want to spend it with anybody else. You make me so much better and we compliment each other so well!! Can’t wait for the best season of life yet!”
