Justin Theroux inadvertently passed up a chance to work with Jennifer Aniston years before their first meeting.

The Leftovers star revealed in a new interview that he skipped out on multiple sitcom auditions in his early acting days, including a potential opportunity to be on Friends. “I didn’t bother,” he recalled in a new interview with Mr. Porter’s The Journal. “I slept in that day. I wouldn’t have been prepared for [the fame].”

More than 15 years after that missed opportunity and long after establishing himself as an actor, Theroux, 46, met Aniston, 48, on the set of the 2012 film Wanderlust. The A-listers dated for several years before marrying in August 2015, and despite busy schedules, their marriage appears to be thriving. The actor credits their marital success to “comedy one-upmanship” and a shared sense of humor. “Why would a man be intimidated by a funny woman? In a perfect world, a relationship is two people laughing together,” he said.

Honesty is also a key element in the couple’s marriage, especially when Theroux tells a bad joke. “When it’s not funny, she calls me out,” he admitted. “She says, ‘That’s not funny.’ Of course she would allow a fart joke, but I think she actually has a more refined sense of humor. I think she’s funnier than that.”

The Girl on the Train actor said acting is a “very bipolar career,” and marriage to Aniston means always being in the public eye. “If nothing else, I have a front-row seat to the insanity, to what make this town so bananas,” he said of Hollywood. “But for the most part, it’s not as pervasive in our lives as people think.”

Theroux praised his wife’s ability to brush off negativity and acknowledged his own steadfast nature. “Occasionally you’ll get whacked by something. It’s definitely something you have to analyze and come to terms with. Which I think [my wife] has done very elegantly and pretty effortlessly,” he concluded. “I think I came into our relationship the same person as I am now.”

Theroux and Aniston celebrated two years of marriage on August 5.
