On Saturday, October 17 Justin Timberlake returned to his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee for his induction into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. Though he spent time thanking those involved with his many career accomplishments during his acceptance speech, it was his touching words about his wife Jessica Biel that resonated with the crowd.
Timberlake, 34, and Biel, 33, who celebrated their three year wedding anniversary two days after the award reception on October 19, also welcomed the birth of their first child, Silas, in April of this year.
After funny introductions by best friend and Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon and Three 6 Mafia’s DJ Paul, Timberlake took to the mic to express his gratitude for the city of Memphis saying, “My favorite part about this city is we don’t apologize for who we are.” He continued, “To be honest, that is what this city has taught me to be more than anything.”
In honor of the University of Memphis’ win over Ole Miss on Saturday, Timberlake lead the crowd in a rendition of the school’s fight song, and then proceeded to thank several people for their work which influenced him both directly and indirectly.
“I wanna thank all the great artists in this hall. I’m truly honored to merely stand on the shoulders of all these legends I grew up listening to, and I grew up admiring, to say that I stand alongside them now.”
Timberlake joked with the crowd that he was about “to become the weird uncle that got drunk at your wedding and took the microphone at the reception,” then let loose a silly and heartfelt thank you to his wife, Biel.
“First, I wanna thank my beautiful, loving, and incredibly-understanding-of her-husband’s-shortcomings wife, Jessica,” he said cracking a few jokes, “She ain’t from here but she built like she is!”
When the crowd settled a bit, Timberlake continued, “Seriously, she is a rock, and she is tough as nails, so she’s basically a Memphian.” With tears in his eyes, he sniffles a little and summed up his sentiment saying, “Baby, I love you more than I could put into words or more than any song I could ever write.”
Biel is seen briefly wiping away her tears, and then in true Timberlake fashion, he tosses another joke at the crowd saying, “We actually just celebrated our third year anniversary, so, which in Hollywood years that’s like a 15-year anniversary.”
The two were married at Borgo Egnazia resort in Puglia, Italy on October 19, 2012 in front of 100 of their closest friends and family members. Biel wore a light pink, custom-made Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown, while Timberlake was fitted with a Tom Ford tuxedo that he co-designed.
