Two rings, one fresh marriage. Hot off their honeymoon, World Series winner Justin Verlander and model Kate Upton stopped by the Today show on Friday, November 17, to discuss their wild, whirlwind wedding week, which included a championship victory followed by lifetime vows.
“We just had a couple days to decompress,” the baseball player told the morning show crew on Friday. “Honestly, it’s kind of weird.”
The couple got married in Tuscany on November 4, a few days after the Houston Astros won the 2017 World Series. Despite the exciting win, there were some concerns about timing leading up to the nuptials especially with the Astros inching along to the championship. Verlander shared that he and Upton had secured the wedding date long before the playoffs, even before he was traded from the Detroit Tigers, his previous team.
“We literally thought there’s only one thing that could really screw all this up—and that’s going to Game 7 of the World Series,” he mused. And then, it happened against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The timing, however, couldn’t have been better for the city of Houston, which is still recovering from Hurricane Harvey’s devastation. “It’s been incredible, the outpouring of love from that city,” Verlander said. “We were in a special place to be able to really connect with the city when they needed it.”
While Verlander was on the mound and Upton was in the stands, their wedding guests had already arrived in Italy. The athlete said he had received texts leading up to Game 7 from guests, who remarked that the venue itself was incredible. Following the victory, Upton and Verlander caught a flight to Italy in time for their wedding. The Astros parade, meanwhile, went on without the pair.
“I feel so lucky that I got to marry my best friend!! @justinverlander,” Upton wrote on Instagram in the days following her nuptials. “Thank you to our family and friends for making this weekend so fun and magical!”
