So many feels. Kathie Lee Gifford got emotional on-air while remembering her late husband, Frank Gifford, on what would have been their 30th wedding anniversary.
The TV personality teared up as Celine Dion’s new song, “The Prayer,” played during her leg of the Today show on Tuesday, October 18.
“You know why that’s a perfect song for me today?” she told her co-host Hoda Kotb. “Today would have been my 30th wedding anniversary with my husband. I’m deeply grateful for all the amazing years I had with this man. So thank you, Carole Bayer Sager, for that beautiful song.”
Gifford’s eyes welled up with tears as she shared the news with viewers. Kotb leaned over and comforted her colleague as a tissue dispenser fell from the ceiling. Gifford then got up from her seat and handed out tissues to people in the room, including Tony-nominated actor Andrew Rannells.
“Sometimes, that’s why I love working with you Hoda-woman,” Gifford concluded. “I can just be real.”
Frank Gifford died of natural causes in his Greenwich, Connecticut home, on August 9, 2015. He was 84. A year after the NFL legend’s death, his loving wife penned a thoughtful tribute on the Today show’s website.
“I’ve gotten through this past year the way I’ve gotten through every day of my life: faithfully trusting God to do what God does, which is to show up, redeem and restore,” Gifford wrote this past August. “If you thought about it as ‘How am I ever going to get through this year?’ — well, God doesn’t promise you a year. He promises you a day at a time. He broke life into 24-hour-periods because that’s all we can handle. The next day, you reach for your fresh cup of mercy that you need every bit as much as the day before.”
The couple got married in 1986, and share two kids, Cody and Cassidy.
