Katie Cassidy’s fiancé certainly did his research when it came to the ring. Ahead of his proposal—which took place this week in Mauritius—Matthew Rodgers sought the expertise of two close friends who knew exactly what the Arrow actress would like.
Rodgers relied on Cassidy’s stylist Alyssa Greene and their mutual friend, L.A-based jeweler Chase Gregory, to dream up the perfect ring for his love. The end result was a five-carat marquise diamond ring that perfectly suited the star’s personality and taste. In an exclusive interview with The Knot, the jeweler explains exactly how the piece came to life, beginning with Greene’s suggestion.
“She sees thousands of people walking red carpets and thought the unique shape would match [Katie’s] personality best,” the jeweler tells us. The actual sourcing of the diamond, meanwhile, came down to himself. “Matt tasked me with scouring the world over for the perfect diamond,” Gregory says.
The true challenge was finding something that would look stunning against the actress’ “long and graceful fingers,” he continues. Ultimately, Gregory found a high-quality stone rather large in size. “We let it be the star of the show,” he says. “I designed a ring with a thin pave shank and added some hidden pave diamonds under the center diamond… For flashes of character as she gazes at it on her finger.”
Rodgers took extra precaution to conceal his romantic proposal plans from Cassidy. The moment was predestined for East Africa on the island of Mauritius following a stop by Mykonos last week. Sometime during their global getaway, the pair had to make a brief stop in London so that Cassidy could make a work appearance at the Heroes & Villains Fan Fest. While she was preoccupied, Rodgers met with Gregory, who personally flew out to London to hand-deliver the ring.
“We met at the May Fair Hotel,” Gregory says. “When Matt opened the box, he was noticeably [mesmerized] by the beauty of the ring and what the ring represented for his future with Katie.”
While the jeweler cannot disclose the value, he confirms: “The ring tops five carats and was hand-made in the Chase Gregory Jewelers studio.” According to the diamond expert, the marquise cut is currently making a comeback especially for the fashion-forward woman.
“The bride who proudly wears a marquise shape diamond doesn’t play by the normal rules of style. She is strong willed and fierce. She most certainly stands out in a crowd,” Gregory opines. “I truly think this will be the summer of the marquise shape diamond. I already have other notable clients who purchased marquise shapes and just haven’t popped the question.”
