Ooh, she fell in love. Kelly Clarkson says getting married her thirties is the secret to her happy marriage to husband Brandon Blackstock.
The mom of two, who got married when she was 31 years old, opened up about her decision to settle down at that age during a luncheon in NYC last week. “I think the biggest thing is just getting married later in life,” the “Miss Independent” singer, now 34, said (via People). “You change so much in your twenties.”
In fact, her husband brought some personal insight into the situation as well. Blackstock, 39, was married to his first wife, Melissa Ashworth, until 2012. The former spouses share two teenage children, Seth and Savannah.
“I mean, [my husband] got married at 21 in his first marriage, and they both went, ‘What?!’” Clarkson continued. “It can be very hard to grow in the same way. Your twenties are all about growth, and giant [mistakes].”
The Texas native and Blackstock married at Blackberry Farms in Walland, Tennessee, on October 20, 2013. Clarkson added in last week’s talk that she felt people in her local community questioned her for not marrying at a younger age.
“I’m from a small town in the South,” she noted. “Everyone thought I was gay ’cause I wasn’t married with kids already! And I was like, ‘That’s kind of insulting to the gay community!’ But, especially in this day and age, I had a very high bar.”
She and Blackstock now share two adorable kids, Remington and River Rose. Clarkson most recently published a children’s book in honor of her daughter called River Rose and the Magical Lullaby.
