It was love at first photograph for Kelly Ripa. The Live With Kelly and Ryan co-host revealed this week that she knew her husband, Mark Consuelos, was “the one” upon seeing his headshot while starring on daytime soap opera All My Children in the 1990s.

“I saw my husband in a photograph before I saw him [in person], and I knew,” Ripa, 47, told Bruce Bozzi on his SiriusXM show. At the time, the show-runners of the soap were looking for the perfect fit for the character Mateo Santos, who would be Ripa’s on-screen love interest.

The casting director of All My Children ran Consuelos by Ripa before pursuing him further. “She said, ‘He’s brand new, just graduated college,’” Ripa recalled. “And she showed me his picture.”

Ripa provided some additional context about her life at the time. “I was not a hopeless romantic,” she mused. “I never thought about getting married. It never occurred to me that I would grow old with someone. I just thought I would be living my single girl-life in the city… I had no responsibilities and I was earning a good living on the soap opera, because I was there for almost seven years before Mark got there. I was a baby when I got my job.”

“So when I saw him—the photograph of him—I saw my entire future with him flash before [my eyes],” she continued. “And I don’t believe in any of that, and now I do because of that moment.”

The couple married in Las Vegas in 1996, and now share three kids, Michael, Lola and Joaquin.

In a recent interview with Anna Faris, Ripa explained what makes her marriage work. “You’re gonna fight. You’re gonna have at each other. We’re gonna annoy each other and do stuff that irritates each other because we’re human beings,” she said. “But at the end of the day, we’re loyal to each other. We care about each other deeply. We’re good friends and, you know, relationships evolve and we just happen to be lucky enough that we evolved together. We grew together. Our roots became entangled.”
