Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler just recently celebrated their five-year anniversary, and with three kids and two successful careers at the forefront of their marriage, the former Hills star came prepared to unveil the secret to her high-profile relationship.
“Jay and I have always had in our favor that we both travel,” she mused in an interview with Us Weekly. “So we’re able to miss each other, which truly I think is the secret. It’s the secret for us.”
As parents to three young kids (sons Camden and Jaxon, ages 5 and 4, and daughter Saylor, 2), the two struggle to find date nights and solo time to unwind. “I mean, the only alone time we really ever have is at night,” she said of their daily schedules. “You know, there’s like that hour and a half window from when the kids go to bed to when we go to bed. And sometimes we just lay in bed and talk. You can’t really talk and connect during the day with the kids because they’re just, you know, they’re so demanding, and I say that in the best way possible. But it’s hard to just have a real conversation, so those nights.”
She added, “And then we do try to make date night a priority. But it’s hard unfortunately, it is. We have to work on it, like everybody else.”
The couple married at Houston Station in Nashville in 2013, and exchanged five-year anniversary gifts in early June. The theme was wood, and Cutler came up with a particularly thoughtful idea.
“He made me a wooden swing for our new house and he engraved it. Which was really sweet,” she told E! News. “I got him whiskey toothpicks made out of wood. I’m like, ‘God, I’m so lame.’ He put a lot of thought into it and I just went to the store and picked up whatever wood stuff I could find.”
