The Bachelor’s newly engaged Lauren Bushnell and Ben Higgins looked tired but in love during an interview with Good Morning America‘s Amy Robach on March 15. The couple touched on some of the challenges they’ve faced since The Bachelor finale, including Lauren’s decision to not watch the entire series.
“Other than a little nap later, I’m looking forward to just starting a normal life,” Lauren, who appeared with her now-taken Bachelor Ben told GMA interviewer Amy. “We’ve been engaged but secretly for the last few weeks so I’m excited to go on a date.”
Sharing that the couple were going to be hanging around New York City for a couple more days Ben said, “I do have a surprise planned for her and I don’t want to ruin it, but we will have a nice dinner date.” With so many twists and turns in the series Ben joked he was having trouble getting out of the rhythm of keeping surprises from Lauren.
But it hasn’t always been easy for The Bachelor and his new bride-to-be Lauren who said the most difficult challenge of being on the show was “just having to relive things that happened.”
“Even though they happened in the past,” Lauren said on GMA, “having to relive that and also having a million different opinions about it” was tough. “But [Ben] laid everything out for me the day after we got engaged.”
When asked how Lauren reacted after watching the finale Ben piped in, “Well the better question is, has she seen last night’s episode?” The future Mrs. Higgins explained she’s “seen bits and pieces” and for that last few episodes has “watched mostly just our parts.”
“Obviously that’s so nice to relive. But I just don’t know if it’s necessary to relive any other parts,” Lauren added.
As we saw during his emotional breakdown before the final rose ceremony, Ben fell in love with the two women – Lauren and Jojo Fletcher. Though Jojo has since moved on with her announcement as the Season 12 Bachelorette, the keeper of the final rose (and engagement ring) Lauren had a feeling Ben could have difficulty choosing between the two.
“I think I said it in one of the episodes that I thought that could be a possibility, so I wasn’t shocked initially,” she said. “I think that day that he did get down on one knee and told me and was just totally honest, I think from that day we really just made a commitment to move forward.”
Ben shared that his family didn’t get the reveal the rest of the world saw last night, explaining that the couple let them know before the finale aired. In defense of his parents on their less-than-helpful advice about his love triangle Ben also said, “It’s kind of like everything else on the show. It doesn’t always relate with real life in a sense. So to fall in love with two people and to try to get advice on that? It doesn’t happen. There’s no training.”
Then came the question we’ve all been wondering about. What happened to their on-air wedding?! When asked why they didn’t have the incredible, opulent, public wedding that their viewers were begging for Ben laughed, “We’ve done this fairly odd the way it is! Let’s try to make things as normal as possible from here on out.
The couple were asked about what surprises they’ve learned about each other since the cameras stopped rolling and “normal” is just what they’re becoming. “Ben is very much a morning person, I’m not so much. So that was just one of those little adjustments that you make when you get engaged,” Lauren said. “Totally livable.”
“Lauren makes amazing breakfast sandwiches. You don’t get that on the show. It’s really nice to wake up and have breakfast sandwiches sitting in front of you,” Ben said before Lauren jumped in again, “And he’s an amazing cook!”
If that’s all that’s surprised them since they fell in love on The Bachelor, then we think Lauren Bushnell and Ben Higgins have a lovely, gourmet future ahead of them!
