Leighton Meester has husband Adam Brody to thank for some of her healthy new habits and hobbies.

The Gossip Girl alum opened up to Shape in its April cover story about how the O.C. actor introduced surfing into her fitness regimen. “Last year, I took up personal training,” she said. “My husband also taught me how to surf, and in the last year, I got really into it. For the last six months, surfing has pretty much been my main form of exercise.”

Meester discovered a deep connection to the sport beyond weight loss. “I have found that when I don’t have a physical result in mind when I’m exercising—it’s not just about getting sore or getting abs or burning fat—I feel much more confident,” she told the mag. “I’m working on a skill, and that is so fulfilling to me. Plus, being in the ocean is such a spiritual experience that you forget you’re getting a real workout.”

Meester and Brody, parents to one daughter named Arlo, have now been married for five years after marrying in February 2014.

Brody will soon appear on Meester’s show Single Parents, but the actor will, interestingly enough, play her character’s ex-boyfriend.

In an interview with Porter Magazine last fall, the largely private actress said she was enjoying her life with her growing family. “I wouldn’t change anything [in the past] because I’m happy where I am now,” she said. “And I think that that’s one of the many wonderful parts of not only having a child and meeting your soulmate, but also I feel really lucky career-wise—really in a place that I want to be.”
