In her appearance on LIVE with Kelly and Michael, Friday Leslie Mann dropped some truth about her longtime husband Judd Apatow’s body while promoting her new movie, How to be Single. Along with sharing the not-so-subtle differences between her on-screen love interest Ken (Jake Lacy) and her real-life hubby Apatow, Mann also revealed Apatow’s methods of winning her over on their first date, and a little “terrible mother” advice for their 18-year-old daughter Maude Apatow.
Describing her How to be Single character Meg as “a career-obsessed woman who kind of forgets about having a relationship and children” who “realizes a little bit late in the game that she wants that,” Mann explained that her character “does it on her own” before meeting a handsome younger man.
“And then she meets a man after she’s done it,” Mann said, “a younger man. A handsome man. And he’s funny too. And he has a nice personality, too, but, he works out a lot. He’s cute,” to which host Kelly Ripa commented on the actress’ blushing face.
Finding it difficult not to compare her husband with her younger, cinematic love interest Mann shared with Ripa and co-host Michael Strahan, “Okay so he has no hair on his body at all, and it’s weird because I’ve been with the same man for 20 years and he’s super hairy and he doesn’t work out at all. It’s a sweet soft body but it’s different from Jake’s,” she said adding, “and Jake’s back doesn’t go out when he picks me up.”
But Apatow must have done something right to get Mann to fall for him years ago, even with his, as Mann put it, soft and hairy body. Recalling their first date, the actress shared she was won over with a less-than gourmet meal and a funny movie.
“I didn’t realize it was a date,” Mann said, “I kept trying to cancel and he was like ‘No, I really want you to come to this basketball game’ and so I was like ah fine.” We’re not sure how the basketball game factored into their date night, but the mood was definitely set when Apatow broke out his master chef skills.
“He made me spaghetti with Ragu sauce, and Wonder Bread with Fleischmann’s margarine, and then some other delicious food I can’t remember what,” Mann shared.
After dinner was done, Mann said, “He played me this movie he wrote called Heavyweights about a fat camp for kids.” The movie in question stars Ben Stiller as a insane health-addicted camp counselor who takes over a summer camp for overweight kids. The kids, many of whom have been attending the camp for years, revolt against the new owner who’s gotten rid of everything fun, and hilarious pranks and one-liners ensue.
“It stuck. It worked.” Mann said, and now knowing Mann’s acting history in films like This Is 40, Knocked Up, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, it’s easy to see how a slapstick comedy starring Stiller, and a classy spaghetti dinner could capture her affection.
After a lot of laugh-inducing conversation about her husband’s body and first date cooking skills the conversation shifted to the couple’s oldest daughter Maude Apatow, when Mann was asked if she offers up advice to her girls.
Prefacing her story by telling the LIVE with Kelly and Michael hosts she’d mentioned the this advice before and “it made me sound like such a creep or a terrible mother. And it may be that I am a terrible mother,” the actress shared the wisdom passed onto her by Polly Platt when she was working on a movie years ago.
“I was wearing a bikini and I was trying to like tie something around my waist and cover up my butt and she said ‘Your butt will never look better than it does right now. Don’t tie that thing on your waist!’” Mann reminisced.
“So I tell my daughter who’s 18, she’s an adult, I say, ‘Show off your body! Wear bikinis all the time! Like, show your boobs, ya know. Just enjoy it!’ Cus it just doesn’t get any better. It just – they don’t get better.” The audience cheered and clapped while Mann gestured that her chest was falling south, to which Ripa wholeheartedly agreed.
Ending the conversation by getting some laughs from both the audience and Mann herself Strahan said, “I’ll be honest with you, I’m not going to argue with your parenting style whatsoever.”
How to be Single premieres just in time for Valentine’s Day on February 12 and stars Leslie Mann alongside Rebel Wilson, Dakota Johnson, and Allison Brie.
