Ten years ago, Carrie Bradshaw debuted a pair of buckled, four-inch stiletto heels in a luxurious satin blue color on Sex and the City. The piece, entitled the “Hangisi” by famed shoe designer Manolo Blahnik, was instantly sealed as 2008’s must-have item for the pop culture savvy-meets-fashion forward woman. It was versatile in its shape and form, allowing shoe enthusiasts to pair the heels with slacks or something more formal for an uptown event.
And, in the past decade, those blue Hangisi stilettos have emerged as the coveted shoe choice for brides in search of a sentimental and stylish Something Blue.
Now, Manolo enthusiasts planning their weddings will want to land his limited edition capsule, which features several tweaks to the traditional Hangisi design. The limited edition collection entitled the “Decade of Love” includes seven distinct styles and is available online and in-stores starting November 15.
Many of Blahnik’s updated designs are a nod to Manhattan, the playground and home of Sarah Jessica Parker’s most beloved on-screen character.
“New York has always had a magical appeal,” the designer told Footwear News this week. The name “Hangisi” is derived from the Turkish phrase of “which one?” Of course, Sex and the City’s heroine was quoted repeatedly throughout the series noting her love of Manolo Blahniks, an organic placement that was the brainchild of series creator Candace Bushnell’s search for another “Mr. B”—and not Mr. Big.
Since then, the obsession has blossomed. “It’s a horror story. It just goes on and on,” he joked about the public’s love of his Hangisi designs. “It’s one of those things that I cannot explain, but I do thank God for it. I never do things thinking they are going to be iconic. It was just a coincidence.”
